{"id":964,"date":"2009-12-04T16:50:33","date_gmt":"2009-12-04T16:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/voteforjoe.com\/wheresjoe\/?p=402"},"modified":"2009-12-04T16:50:33","modified_gmt":"2009-12-04T16:50:33","slug":"economy-of-communion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=964","title":{"rendered":"Economy of Communion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last blog entry, I wrote about part of <em>The New Economy<\/em> we propose. \u00a0 The essence revolves around a much more simplified, small-scale humanitarian approach. \u00a0 Today I met with Professor Mike Griffin from Holy Cross College in South Bend, Indiana. \u00a0 He, too, is interested in a major shift in the economy. \u00a0 What he proposes is an &#8220;Economy of Communion.&#8221; \u00a0 That is, the essence of transactions in this kind of economy would be centered on the common good. \u00a0 For instance, Professor Griffin is in the formulating stages of a class about the importance of exploring the dimensions of local agriculture. \u00a0 He would expose students to the concepts of local farmers growing for the local community and selling the food through local grocers, farmer&#8217;s markets, community sponsored agriculture&#8230; \u00a0 It is in this, that the interdependence between farmer and community members grows exponentially &#8212; bringing everyone is strong &#8220;communion&#8221; with each other. \u00a0 This only makes sense. \u00a0 Spiritual sense. \u00a0 <strong>Note:<\/strong> \u00a0 Professor Griffin is also a strong proponent of &#8220;fair trade,&#8221; which is about bringing us more in &#8220;communion&#8221; with our brothers and sisters in the Third World. \u00a0 Fair Trade promotes the selling of such things as coffee, clothes, arts &amp; crafts&#8230; at &#8220;fair&#8221; prices to help farmers and artisans in poorer countries. \u00a0 Investing in things like fair trade is &#8220;putting flesh on the concept of love,&#8221; Professor Griffin added&#8230; \u00a0 Professor Griffin is a &#8220;friend of the Catholic Worker&#8221; in South Bend. \u00a0 The Catholic Worker was started by Dorothy Day. \u00a0 In her book <em>Loaves and Fishes<\/em>, Ms. Day writes that &#8220;poverty has many faces&#8221; and we must continually ask, not only how we are to help the poor in the immediate, but why the poor are poor systemically. \u00a0 And when we figure that out, then we are to, well, change the system(s). \u00a0 <em>The New Economy<\/em> we are working on, does this in spades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the last blog entry, I wrote about part of The New Economy we propose. \u00a0 The essence revolves around a much more simplified, small-scale humanitarian approach. \u00a0 Today I met with Professor Mike Griffin from Holy Cross College in <span class=\"excerpt-dots\">&hellip;<\/span> <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=964\"><span class=\"more-msg\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-964","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/964","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=964"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/964\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=964"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=964"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=964"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
