{"id":950,"date":"2009-10-03T23:56:29","date_gmt":"2009-10-03T23:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/voteforjoe.com\/wheresjoe\/?p=388"},"modified":"2009-10-03T23:56:29","modified_gmt":"2009-10-03T23:56:29","slug":"greenhouse-gassing-studebakers-and-our-lady-of-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=950","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;greenhouse gassing,&#8217; Studebakers and Our Lady of the Way&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Catching up from the last week&#8230; While in South Bend, Indiana, I was invited to a Ph.D. level Law Class at Notre Dame University. \u00a0 The class discussion this day revolved around the legal reasons the Bush Administration used for a preemptive war in Iraq. \u00a0 The professor noted at one point that one rationale was Hussein&#8217;s violations of human rights, like &#8220;gassing the Kurds.&#8221; \u00a0 I interjected that as the world&#8217;s leading producer of carbon dioxide, the U.S. was, in a very real sense, &#8220;green house gassing the world.&#8221; \u00a0 And if the scientists are right, this is already playing havoc with weather patterns, including causing drought and famine in more arid countries now. \u00a0 So, from a common sense stand point, wouldn&#8217;t other nations have the right to launch a preemptive strike at, well, us? \u00a0 There was marked silence in the class&#8230; Later that night, I attended a talk at Notre Dame by the head chaplain in the U.S. Navy. \u00a0 During the question and answer period, I asked about Catholic soldiers who adhered to the church teaching on Just War Doctrine. \u00a0 Pointing, again, to the Iraq War &#8212; which Pope John Paul II said wasn&#8217;t a Just War &#8212; I asked the chaplain if he could see a time in the future when, for instance, a Catholic soldier could opt out of a war. \u00a0 Just like an Amish person opts out of the military for their religious reasons. \u00a0 He answered that he could, indeed, see that&#8230; \u00a0 During the week, I took the kids to the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend where we played some football on the Astro-turf out in front of the building&#8230; \u00a0 At an <em>Art Walk<\/em> in downtown South Bend, we stopped by a booth about the Studebaker Nationall Museum. \u00a0 There was a &#8217;50s Studebaker on display at the booth. \u00a0 South Bend was the home of the Studebaker family and the collection of wagons, vehicles and artifacts at the museum span some 150 years&#8230; \u00a0 While in South Bend, our family also volunteered at the <em>Our Lady of the Way<\/em> drop-in center for the poor here. \u00a0 It is run by the local Catholic Worker group and is a sterling example of social justice at it&#8217;s best. \u00a0 Everyone is welcome here&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catching up from the last week&#8230; While in South Bend, Indiana, I was invited to a Ph.D. level Law Class at Notre Dame University. \u00a0 The class discussion this day revolved around the legal reasons the Bush Administration used for <span class=\"excerpt-dots\">&hellip;<\/span> <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=950\"><span class=\"more-msg\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-950","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/950","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=950"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/950\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=950"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=950"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=950"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
