Last night I talked with a \u00a0man in his mid-20s \u00a0at a Catholic Worker street outreach \u00a0at our neighborhood in Cleveland. \u00a0 Nice guy, but hurting tremendously. \u00a0 He’s currently living in his car and parks in a friend’s driveway on the east side of town at night. \u00a0 \u00a0The man is \u00a0originally from Fremont, Ohio. \u00a0 \u00a0He has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, manic depression and sometimes cuts himself. \u00a0 I used to do dual diagnosis work with drug and alcohol and mental health patients. \u00a0 And I know that, ideally, \u00a0this man \u00a0needs a supervised group home setting and a “Care Team” of people around him. \u00a0 That is, he needs \u00a0someone to take him places, \u00a0someone to fundraise so he can get a college education (he wants to go to school), \u00a0someone to tutor him, people to just be his friends… \u00a0 But he, like so many people down here, is \u00a0falling through the cracks. \u00a0 Why? \u00a0 Because those more well-off care very little, if at all. \u00a0 That simple.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
