Buckeye Back Road Tour:<\/strong> \u00a0 We went to Lordstown High School where I talked at a Candidate’s Forum put on by political science teacher Terry Armstrong and his classes. \u00a0 Mr. Armstrong took a good number of students to the Iowa Caucuses, helped arrange for some students to go to Hillary Clinton’s talk in Lordstown the week before, and \u00a0contacted the candidates for this forum so his students could be informed voters. \u00a0 \u00a0What a refreshing<\/em> teaching style, huh. \u00a0…I turned the talk into quite an interactive, and unscripted, \u00a0“Town Hall Meeting,” if you will. \u00a0 The students became tremendously animated and engaged in what turned out to be a lively<\/em> debate. \u00a0 One student asked me my stance on embryonic stem cell research. \u00a0 I said I believed life began at conception and that this was a form of abortion. \u00a0 Some of the students grumbled. \u00a0 I asked to see a show of hands: \u00a0 “How many of you have been embryos?” \u00a0 The grumbling subsided a bit. \u00a0 The students wanted to also talk about immigration, poverty in the inner city, the Iraq War… \u00a0 One student pointed out that before we went to war with Iraq, Saddam Hussein was “torturing” people. \u00a0 I asked the students how many of them thought water-boarding (simulating drowning), which \u00a0the U.S. is \u00a0doing with terrorist suspects now, \u00a0is “torture.” \u00a0 A majority raised their hands \u00a0indicating they believed \u00a0it was. \u00a0 “So we’re doing the same thing Hussein was doing?” \u00a0 I asked. \u00a0 That seemed to give everyone pause. \u00a0 Almost as much pause as when I said that we went into Iraq looking for Weapons of Mass Destruction “…yet we have 10,000 of them aimed all over the world!”<\/em> \u00a0 Many say we’ll never use them. \u00a0 I say: \u00a0 “Tell that to the little children who were incinerated at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.” \u00a0 Note:<\/strong> \u00a0 The first local candidate to speak after me was the current County Coroner. \u00a0 He ended his talk to the students by saying: \u00a0 “You can be thankful you’re seeing me socially here — \u00a0and not professionally at my office.” \u00a0 A coroner with a sense of humor. \u00a0 He got my vote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
