While back in Cleveland, my daughter Sarah and I attended a session on Sabbath Economics<\/em> at the Catholic Worker House. \u00a0 One participant said that our society has become absolutely nuts with complexity. \u00a0 That is, we now spend so much time almost frenetically trying to decide between all<\/em> the different types of washing machines, all<\/em> the different types of options for cars, all<\/em> the different types of clothing… \u00a0 In the last blog entry, I talk about stopping in Plain City, Ohio. \u00a0 Maybe we as a society should consider going \u00a0to ‘Plain City’ \u00a0figuratively as well. \u00a0 The Amish have. \u00a0 Or actually, they have never left. \u00a0 In our research travel, we have stopped in Amish communities in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois… \u00a0 The Amish live simply. \u00a0 They \u00a0ride in \u00a0buggies with few options. \u00a0 They wear plain clothes that all look \u00a0pretty much \u00a0the same. \u00a0 They don’t worry about whether to get the television screen with \u00a0the higher resolution, or not. \u00a0 Because, well, they don’t watch television. \u00a0 In living simply, the Amish \u00a0have way<\/em> more time for God, for family, for community… \u00a0 And when you think about it common sense wise, \u00a0isn’t that the kind of trade off we should all be considering?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
