Buckeye Back Roads Tour<\/strong>: \u00a0 We’ve been buzzing (‘Buckeye buzzing,’ if you will — sorry)around the state this last month. \u00a0 The following are some more vignettes from the road: \u00a0 In Plain City, Ohio, I put up a black \u00a0& white flier in the Pioneer Club Coffee Shop<\/em> that said: “Hello Plain City! …from the ‘plain’ candidate.” \u00a0 Once again, we’re doing this all without paid political consultants. A patron in the shop started \u00a0to argue \u00a0with me over our stance on illegal immigration. \u00a0 We propose amnesty and \u00a0he said he thinks we should: “…send them all<\/em> back. \u00a0 Just ask the Native Americans about illegal immigration,” he \u00a0added in all seriousness. \u00a0 What an ironic twist, huh. \u00a0 I should \u00a0have then told him \u00a0our platform point about giving the Native Americans back some of the land we stole. \u00a0 (I’m sure that<\/em> would have gone over big, too. Ah, these unscripted campaign stops.) \u00a0 But I was in a hurry, so I gave him \u00a0our web address… \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In Lancaster, Ohio, \u00a0I sat in on a talk about “death and dying” by a Catholic nun who specializes in the topic. \u00a0 Someone in the audience said she’d just recently read in Time Magazine<\/em> that 65% of an average American’s healthcare costs go to — their last two months of life.<\/em> \u00a0 This money is \u00a0sometimes spent \u00a0on, \u00a0what the \u00a0Catholic Church would term, “extraordinary” medical measures. \u00a0 \u00a0And these measures \u00a0amount to \u00a0billions and billions \u00a0of dollars every year — \u00a0while many in the Third World don’t have even the basics in medicine, period. \u00a0 During the Q&A part of the presentation, I mentioned that this might be, oh, a little self-indulgent on our parts. \u00a0 It’s kind of like American funerals. \u00a0 We spend 4,000 bucks on a casket for one dead American, while that money would build two nice Habitat for Humanity<\/em> homes for a lot of ‘living’ Ugandans (Haitians, Nigerians…). \u00a0 This all would once again beg the question: \u00a0Have we Americans become \u00a0insanely blind when it comes to social justice? \u00a0<\/em> Note<\/strong>: \u00a0 The guy in Plain City who wanted to send all the illegal immigrants back, prefaced that statement with: \u00a0 “I love my country…” \u00a0 Funny, I’d just seen a bumper sticker in Columbus the day before that read: \u00a0 “Even though I love my country… \u00a0it’s time we start seeing other people.”<\/strong> \u00a0 Note 2:<\/strong> \u00a0We’ve just arrived back home in Cleveland for a brief pit stop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
