Average JoeOhio Tour cont:<\/strong> \u00a0 \u00a0Leaving \u00a0Mass yesterday morning, a friend walked up and said: \u00a0 “Well this is it Joe, (Election year) 2008.” \u00a0 And so it is… Since the polls are showing \u00a0I’m still, oh, a little bit behind, I went to stump, and volunteer, at “The Storefront,” a Catholic Worker outreach to the poor in the area. \u00a0 One guy who was new approached me and said that someone had told him I was running for president. \u00a0 “Is that president like what George Bush is right now?” \u00a0 He asked somewhat incredulously. \u00a0 Ok, so I’m not a household name yet… \u00a0 On a more sober note, another group of guys who stay in abandoned buildings and vehicles in the area, told me they heard a lot of gun shots about 3 a.m. New Year’s Day morning. \u00a0 “Are you sure they weren’t fireworks?” \u00a0 I asked. \u00a0 One guy smiled and said gunfire sounds nothing like fireworks, especially close by. \u00a0 “Pow, pow, pow…”<\/em><\/strong> he demonstrated for emphasis. \u00a0 And thus another new year is rung in in Cleveland, currently the country’s poorest city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
