For Labor Day yesterday, I labored. \u00a0 I stumped in downtown Berlin Heights, Ohio. \u00a0I also \u00a0interviewed Jack Vandebemt. \u00a0 He was collecting signatures for his 71-year-old, soon to be father-in-law, \u00a0Albert Maynard. \u00a0 (The family was collecting signatures to help keep \u00a0Mr. Maynard \u00a0in his home of 17 years.) \u00a0 Jack said Mr. Maynard’s home is on Metro Park property. \u00a0 And although he was verbally told he could stay \u00a0in \u00a0the home the rest of his life, Jack continued, the Parks Department is now asking him to leave. \u00a0 (The story has been featured in a couple local newspapers.) \u00a0 In the past two days, the family had collected a phenomenal — for these parts — 600 signatures. \u00a0 Mr. Maynard is somewhat of a local hero, having once saved a local couple from a burning house. \u00a0 What’s more, his wife had recently died. \u00a0 “It’s just the idea of \u00a0his age and health,” said Jack, explaining \u00a0he would do everything he could on a grassroots level to help Mr. Maynard stay in his home… \u00a0 I then headed down a back road out of Berlin Heights, ending up at Tim Tullinghast’s fruit and vegetable stand. \u00a0 Mr. Tullinghast and his family have been in their house — for eight generations<\/em>. \u00a0 “I’d never sell the house,” he said. \u00a0 “It needs to be passed on because of all the heritage.” \u00a0 Note:<\/strong> \u00a0 While at the stand, a good number of people pulled up — including many who were interested in the campaign. \u00a0 I passed out flyers and posed for cell phone pictures. \u00a0 This went on for the better part of an hour. \u00a0 By the time I left, I had a watermelon and at least a few more votes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
