Daniel Orr at St. Paul&#8217;s Episcopal Church in Fremont, Ohio. \u00a0 He was talking about God&#8217;s word being like &#8220;fire.&#8221; \u00a0 That is, it sears to the very heart of the matter. \u00a0 And in the year 2007, the &#8216;matter(s)&#8217; include, said Rev: Daniel: \u00a0 We (Americans) are plenty responsible for a lot of oppression and innocent blood. \u00a0 The gloss hides the migrant laborers who pick our food for a pittance; the young people in China who live in barracks and make our shirts, shoes, dresses; the laborers in Guatemala who pick our bananas with no EPA to regulate what is sprayed. \u00a0 The gloss is thick. \u00a0 And we help keep it that way. \u00a0 We seem to be able to justify great expense on one of our own family members &#8212; presents, camps, lessons, toys, parties&#8230; We have an unspoken preoccupation with those closest to us &#8212; our families and friends. \u00a0 If we have any energy left over, or any change, then that goes to those who need it. \u00a0 Where is the justice in that?&#8221; \u00a0 Afterwards, Rev. Orr asked me to say a few words. \u00a0 I said our platform called for people to sacrifice in as many ways as possible &#8212; so there was, indeed, \u00a0justice. \u00a0 That is, many of us could easily go to housesharing, old Volkwagon Beetles, less clothes, less dining out, no air conditioning&#8230; \u00a0 Yet we are <em>so<\/em> focused on our own comfort, while people go without just the basics in shelter, food, medicine&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard one of the best talks in all our travels. \u00a0 It was given by Rev.
