Early this week, new Ohio Governor Ted Strickland denied clemency to convicted killer Kenneth Biros. \u00a0 In the middle of the week, I attended a “Prayer Service to Abolish the Death Penalty.” \u00a0 It was facilitated by Pax Christi member Tim Musser. \u00a0 Mr. Musser passed out \u00a0a sheet that contained statements from murder victims’ relatives. \u00a0 Marietta Jaeger: \u00a0 “Believe me, there are no amounts of retaliatory acts that will compensate for the loss of my little girl, or restore her to my arms. \u00a0 Even to say that the death of one malfunctioning person is going to be a retribution is an insult to her immeasurable worth to me.” \u00a0 Coretta Scott King: “An evil deed is not redeemed by an evil deed of retaliation. \u00a0 Morality is never upheld by legalized murder.” \u00a0 And that is what the death penalty is, legalized murder<\/em>. \u00a0 …Governor Strickland was quoted in Cleveland’s Plain Dealer<\/em> newspaper as saying that the death penalty is a “heavy burden” for him. \u00a0 It should be. \u00a0 During the open forum part of the prayer service, I shared that if you take someone’s life before, say, they’ve repented, you could be allowing for an eternity spent in Hell. \u00a0 What’s more, the person(s) allowing this (Governor denying clemency, state Congress passing legislation to ok the death penalty, voters backing pro-death penalty candidates…) may be in for a rude awakening at Judgement themselves when God asks. \u00a0 “So, how’d you do on the ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’ thing? \u00a0 Not to mention the ‘…forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.'” \u00a0 Note:<\/strong> \u00a0 The closing prayer that Mr. Musser read this night included: \u00a0 “Capital punishment is not what Jesus taught. \u00a0 It is what he suffered.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
