{"id":606,"date":"2007-03-01T17:20:20","date_gmt":"2007-03-01T17:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/voteforjoe.com\/wheresjoe\/?p=39"},"modified":"2007-03-01T17:20:20","modified_gmt":"2007-03-01T17:20:20","slug":"22707","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=606","title":{"rendered":"2\/27\/07"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On our journey down Rte. 19 in Georgia, we stumped in the small town of Smithville, where a couple men \u00a0told me \u00a0there was no longer a grocery store here because bigger ones have gone up in more centralized towns. \u00a0 So people in Smithville have to now drive aways, and in turn, global warming \u00a0increases&#8230; \u00a0 In Albany, Georgia, we were interviewed by <em>Fox News<\/em> and <em>Channel 10 News<\/em>. \u00a0 The reporter for <em>Channel 10<\/em> News asked, rather skeptically, if it would be good to have just an &#8220;average&#8221; citizen in the Whitehouse. \u00a0 I said with the &#8220;highly educated&#8221; (Harvard, Yale&#8230;) brain trust that is currently in D.C. in general, we are in an ill-begotten war, have an almost 11 trillion dollar National Debt, some 46 million people don&#8217;t have healthcare insurance, global warming is increasing at an alarming rate, children sleep on inner city streets&#8230; Maybe \u00a0people we currently consider &#8220;highly educated,&#8221; are, in fact, \u00a0tremendously short on common sense, social justice awareness and environmental stewardship. \u00a0 \u00a0And in all that, aren&#8217;t \u00a0we falling down (priority wise) \u00a0on what people <em>really<\/em> need to be &#8220;educated&#8221; in. \u00a0 <strong>Black History Month Note<\/strong>: \u00a0 After the interviews, we toured Albany&#8217;s Civil Rights Museum. \u00a0 The 1961 protests against segregation here (dubbed the &#8220;Albany Movement&#8221;), proceeded the protests in Selma and Montgomery. \u00a0 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came here to stand in solidarity. \u00a0 And it was the lessons learned here that helped define the Civil Right&#8217;s strategies going into Alabama. \u00a0 While Blacks weren&#8217;t initially successful here in reversing segregation, by March of 1963, Albany&#8217;s Segregation Laws were finally removed. \u00a0 &#8220;Victory is not to the swift&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0 Dr. King had said&#8230; I also interviewed Albany&#8217;s Lula Porter, 73. \u00a0 She marched in protest in 1961 as a young black woman. \u00a0 It took tremendous courage, because many blacks went to jail. \u00a0 And in jail sometimes in the South &#8212; \u00a0blacks were never heard from again. \u00a0 Ms. Porter pointed out that while Segregation Laws have changed, we still have a long way to go. \u00a0 Because, for instance, there are still <em>so many<\/em> all white churches, all black churches, all white neighborhoods, all black neighborhoods. \u00a0 &#8220;We need to get together, we need to reason together,&#8221; she Ms. Porter said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On our journey down Rte. 19 in Georgia, we stumped in the small town of Smithville, where a couple men \u00a0told me \u00a0there was no longer a grocery store here because bigger ones have gone up in more centralized towns. <span class=\"excerpt-dots\">&hellip;<\/span> <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=606\"><span class=\"more-msg\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-606","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/606","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=606"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/606\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=606"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=606"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=606"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
