\u00a0 \u00a0 In Rome, Georgia, we attended a study group about the writings of G.K. Chesterton Saturday evening. \u00a0 Facilitator Tom Farmer presented a number of famous Chesterton quotes. \u00a0 The one that particularly struck me was: “Fallacies do not cease \u00a0to be \u00a0fallacies \u00a0because they \u00a0become fashions.” (…from the book Orthodoxy<\/em>.) \u00a0 Things that have become ‘fashionable’ these days in America include, for instance, both parents working in pursuit of moving further (and often unnecessarily so) along the “American Dream” continuum. \u00a0 The trade off, and a tragic one at that, is \u00a0many children \u00a0are now \u00a0raised in Day Care, or in front of televisions, or computers… \u00a0One Christian man in the group said he and his wife had made a calculated decision \u00a0that \u00a0the wife, not only stay home with their children, but that she home school the children as well. \u00a0 As a suffix, he ruefully smiled: \u00a0 “When someone asks me what my wife ‘does,’ I tell them: ‘She’s at home with our children preparing them for an eternity in Heaven. \u00a0 What does your<\/em> wife \u00a0do?” \u00a0Note:<\/strong> \u00a0 The next day we went to Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Rome. \u00a0 \u00a0A visiting priest \u00a0said it’s ok to “enjoy nice things,” but we must also be mindful of the poor. \u00a0 My wife Liz challenged him afterward, questioning whether it’s spiritually sound to affirm current American \u00a0consumer patterns (again, the “fashion” of the day), while so much of the world lives in dire abject poverty. \u00a0 \u00a0The priest’s \u00a0response, and a gracious one at that, was: \u00a0 “Well, I guess I’ve still got another Mass today to get that right.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
