Our “Buckeye Back Roads Tour” continues…\u00a0 The following are\u00a0a couple\u00a0vignettes from the past several weeks:\u00a0 In a park in Upper Sandusky, Ohio,\u00a0during a Little League Baseball game, I was passing out campaign cards between innings when one middle aged man stopped me and said:\u00a0 “I killed Lincoln.”\u00a0 That’s right, it gave me pause too — especially because we haven’t been assigned a Secret Service detail yet.\u00a0 He then smiled, shook my hand and said his name was: “John Booth.”\u00a0 “Must have been a little rough at school,” I smiled back.\u00a0 As coincidence would have it, we traveled the Old Lincoln Highway later that afternoon passing out more cards and\u00a0putting up fliers…\u00a0 Later in Port Clinton, Ohio, I noticed a bumper sticker on a car outside a coffee shop there.\u00a0 It read:\u00a0 “Factory farms are the biggest source of global warming.\u00a0 Go Vegan!”\u00a0<\/strong> I went inside and asked.\u00a0 (I’m like that.)\u00a0 The woman who owned the car said because of the large number of cows’ combined flatulations (or, put another way…), big methane plumes are continually rising.\u00a0 And methane is way<\/em> more toxic, global warming wise, than carbon dioxide.\u00a0 (I’d read that too.)\u00a0 And what’s more, there is concern because of global warming, that the Pacific sea bed will soon thaw enough to release massive amounts of methane trapped below — which could be catastrophic.\u00a0 So what do we do?\u00a0 We could stop putting beans in the cow feed, or, say, we could go to a sane, multi-dimensional approach to curbing global warming in general.\u00a0 That is, on the front end we could outlaw factory farms and\u00a0we could initially sacrifice our energy use in general, even if that means energy rationing at first.\u00a0 I mean we rationed for the war effort in World War II, and this is another type of ‘war.’\u00a0 A war on the environment.\u00a0 In addition, we could exponentially step up the development and use of clean, renewable energy (solar, wind, wave action…)\u00a0 Being good environmental stewards will ensure a world for our children — if it’s not already too late.\u00a0 For more, see our position paper on energy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
