The campaign continues…\u00a0 This last week, Liz and I met with Debbie and Kevin Moore.\u00a0 They were missionaries in Madagascar\u00a0 for 17 years.\u00a0 Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the world, and the 10th poorest country.\u00a0 Although quite close to the equator, there is little electricity and no air conditioning —\u00a0 few fans even for that matter.\u00a0 Kevin said the body simply “adjusts.”\u00a0 This should be a concept that is in play in Durban, South Africa, this week at the U.N. Climate Change Convention.\u00a0 We all need to have our bodies: “adjust.”\u00a0 Or put another way, we need to: “sacrifice.”\u00a0 That is, if we don’t want to pass on a world of climate chaos to our children, I recently said\u00a0during a talk at the University of Notre Dame.\u00a0 If they can do it in Durban, they can do it in Des Moines…\u00a0 Another thing they don’t have in Madagascar is much in the way of televisions, radios, cell phones…\u00a0 Instead they have deep, meaningful relationships with each other because they’re not distracted by all this technological stuff, said Debbie Moore.\u00a0 Hmmm…\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em> Note:<\/strong>\u00a0 Later in the week,\u00a0some of our family members\u00a0participated in a “Take Back The Night”<\/strong> event in Bluffton, Ohio.\u00a0 It was sponsored by our daughter Sarah’s Girl Scout Troupe.\u00a0 Sarah was the\u00a0anouncer for the event, and my wife Liz shared a personal experience.\u00a0 She talked about breaking up a domestic violence dispute between a young Hispanic husband and wife on our street back in Cleveland several years ago.\u00a0 The husband was drunk and threatening to beat his wife with a pool stick out in front of their house.\u00a0 Neighbors were standing in their front yards, but when Liz screamed for someone to call the police — nobody moved.\u00a0 Liz, in turn, bravely stepped inbetween the couple and it de-escalated.\u00a0 In our neighborhood, it could have well gone the other way.\u00a0 Note 2:\u00a0<\/strong> Last Saturday NASA launched the Mars rover “Curiosity” on a mission to find “chemical ingredients needed for life” on planet Mars.\u00a0 A program that, since it’s inception, has cost billions of dollars.\u00a0 I’m ‘curious.’\u00a0 Don’t ya gotta wonder how far those billions of dollars would have gone in helping to impact world hunger and homelessness for: LIFE ON PLANET EARTH!?<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, we already know there’s ‘life’ here, right?\u00a0\u00a0President Obama, who is promoting this Mars mission, recently said we have to go into space in a “smarter way.”\u00a0 How ‘smart’ is spending billions of dollars on this, while 24,000 people starve to death every day worldwide?\u00a0 I mean,\u00a0you have to also be ‘curious’ about whether\u00a0they have any classes on “Common Sense for the Common Good”<\/strong> at Harvard?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
