{"id":1137,"date":"2011-06-18T21:38:22","date_gmt":"2011-06-18T21:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/voteforjoe.com\/wheresjoe\/?p=610"},"modified":"2011-06-18T21:38:22","modified_gmt":"2011-06-18T21:38:22","slug":"the-sudan-spanky-and-our-organic-farming-norman-rockwell-volleyball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=1137","title":{"rendered":"The Sudan, Spanky And Our Gang, organic farming, &#8216;Norman Rockwell volleyball&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Catching up on our last week in Ohio&#8230; We&#8217;ve come to farm country near the mid-western border of Ohio for a pit stop. \u00a0 \u00a0This afternoon \u00a0I was out in a barn \u00a0putting up \u00a0bales of hay&#8230; \u00a0 Earlier in the day, I talked with a man in Greenville, Ohio, who is a member of the <strong>Ginghamsburg Methodist Church<\/strong> in Ginghamsburg, Ohio. \u00a0 Among a wide variety of outreaches, both domestic and overseas, this church regularly sends \u00a0congregation members \u00a0to help in The Sudan. \u00a0 They go to help in the midst of the violence\/genocide, in the midst of \u00a0abject poverty, because, well, that&#8217;s the Gospel message.This man said that while much of the church money could go into bigger church buildings, and so on, the pastor thinks there are greater needs. \u00a0 Good paradigm&#8230; \u00a0 In Greenville, I also interviewed Amber Schmerge at the Greenville Farmer&#8217;s Market downtown. \u00a0 Ms. Schmerge is the director of the Downtown Re-Development Project here. \u00a0 The project is multi-pronged. \u00a0 It focuses on attracting new business to the downtown. \u00a0 It&#8217;s involved with historic preservation. \u00a0 And it \u00a0features \u00a0an array of creative approaches to get people coming back downtown again. \u00a0 As an example, one Friday night a month an outside \u00a0movie is shown on 5th Street here. \u00a0 Last month the feature was <em><strong>Spanky And Our Gang<\/strong><\/em>, which drew 150 people&#8230; \u00a0 I&#8217;ve also spent part of the week sanding our campaign vehicle. \u00a0 (I&#8217;m <em>really<\/em> hoping <strong>Air Force 1<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t have any rust.)&#8230; \u00a0 And finally, I met with <strong>organic farmer<\/strong> Dan Kremer. \u00a0 He said current applications of artificial pesticides and herbicides on conventional farms get into the food, which we then ingest. \u00a0 He said there are links between eating these foods and cancer. \u00a0 What&#8217;s more, these pesticides and herbicides damage the microbes in the soil that are part of the nutrition chain to the plants. \u00a0 As a result, the crops are becoming less and less nutritious. \u00a0 In turn, our immune systems are diminished in kind. \u00a0 And the weaker the immune system, the less it&#8217;s ability to fight carcinogens that come into our bodies. \u00a0 A staggering one in three people in America \u00a0now get cancer. \u00a0 I told \u00a0a newspaper in rural \u00a0Bellefountaine, Ohio, that instead of <em>just<\/em> &#8220;Racing for a Cure,&#8221; common sense says we should: <strong>STOP USING THE STUFF THAT CAUSES CANCER IN THE FIRST PLACE!
