{"id":1019,"date":"2010-05-03T15:35:41","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T15:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/voteforjoe.com\/wheresjoe\/?p=457"},"modified":"2010-05-03T15:35:41","modified_gmt":"2010-05-03T15:35:41","slug":"seven-days-through-the-desert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voteforjoeblog.com\/?p=1019","title":{"rendered":"seven days through the desert&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our<em> Deep in the Heart of Texas Tour<\/em> \u00a0 continues&#8230; \u00a0 In Beaumont, Texas, we stood in solidarity with a group protesting abortion in front of a woman&#8217;s clinic. \u00a0 The sign out front read: \u00a0<strong> &#8220;Changing the world, one woman at a time.&#8221;<\/strong> \u00a0 And <em>what<\/em> a world it&#8217;s becoming&#8230; \u00a0 We then headed into a hardscrabble area of Houston where we&#8217;re doing research at the Casa Juan Diego House of Hospitality. \u00a0 As all the rhetoric heats up around the immigration debate nationwide, the people here take in illegal immigrants and clothe them, feed them, get them medical attention, help them find jobs&#8230; \u00a0 People like &#8220;Jose.&#8221; \u00a0 He told me he came from the rural village of Michohcan, Mexico, where there is little work and a <em>whole<\/em> \u00a0 lot of poverty. \u00a0 His mother is elderly, his brother (who still lives with the mom) has Down Syndrome and he came here to find work to help them. \u00a0 He and a friend walked through the desert for seven days, swam across a river on the border and walked another seven days to get to Houston. \u00a0 He&#8217;s now struggling to get a small foothold in this country. \u00a0 Deport him?
