Our Louisiana Gumbo Tour<\/em> continues in New Orleans… \u00a0 We stopped at St. Thomas Catholic Worker House in the heart of the city here on Constance St. \u00a0 They take in homeless people, have set up a community garden, lobby for more low income housing… \u00a0 While here, I was given a tour of a Hope 6 Project<\/em> just east of the Catholic Worker House. \u00a0 Several blocks used to be Housing and Urban Development Projects housing \u00a0that incrementally got run down. \u00a0 HUD came back in and contracted with a developer to put up new, less population dense “mixed housing.” \u00a0 That is, there is now high income, middle income and low income housing mixed together. \u00a0 \u00a0While the neighborhood looks better and is safer, the problem then became that a significant number of low income people got displaced from \u00a0neighborhoods they might have been living in for generations… \u00a0 Just beyond this neighborhood is the Mississippi River. \u00a0 It drains here into the Gulf of Mexico. \u00a0 Because of the continual \u00a0flow of toxic runoff (primarily farm chemicals) upstream, a huge “dead zone” is being created in the Gulf. \u00a0 Also, where layers of sediment would have naturally leeched over the east and west river banks, high flood walls now keep the sediment ‘unnaturally’ moving south — and into the Gulf. \u00a0 Where it, too, is creating environmental problems. \u00a0 Common sense would say that maybe we<\/em> \u00a0 should start adapting more to nature’s ebb and flow… \u00a0 I also talked at Jesuit High School in New Orleans today. \u00a0 Topics included: the National Debt; abortion; Third World poverty; taxes… \u00a0I turned it into a ‘town hall style \u00a0meeting,’ of sorts, with the students becoming quite animated about many of the topics. \u00a0 \u00a0 Note:<\/strong> \u00a0 One of our Georgia supporters, Dr. Jonathan Davis just put together an absolutely excellent campaign photo album<\/a> \u00a0for us…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
